The Fish account who put out bounties on multiple people a couple of months ago, with the one on my Substack collected on within twenty-four hours on the criminally minded offer.
Fish is similarly offering action on MikoMoby, though not clearly as obvious as he did in the past given the following tweet.
First, fish isn’t getting trolled. He isn’t happy that his first banned account, restored after the one-year suspension ended, Tito Libido was being identified correctly as racially offensive. It is.
Fish chose Opper’s cartoon intentionally, seeking an obviously racist image out that had plausible deniability built into it until he noted who and how he came to that choice. He then added Tito Libido as his screen name, linking in the targeted group he wanted demeaned to Hispanics.
While the character within the cartoon wasn’t hispanic, Fish made it so naming him Tito. That choice as well as seeking out a noted cartoonist for drawing racist imagery, clearly waves red flags about what the intent behind using such an image to identify himself is. After that, Fish’s next two accounts named Jim Watkins, the man who bought 8Chan from Fred Brennan, clearly tying those accounts into the Chan racist ideology.
Back to Opper’s work. Jeet Heer wrote a blog post on March 14, 2011 regarding Opper and his use of racism as a stylistic choice.
Opper drew derogatory cartoons demeaning many racial groups. The image Fish chose was demeaning to either Czech, German or Irish settlers of the region, the predominant groups that first inhabited the region. While these groups are identified as white now, they were on the lowest tier of economic and political power among various white-ethnicities, frequently discriminated against by the wealthier European ethnicities especially when they generally fell within Catholicism versus the more progressive Protestant religious cultures. The Klan in the South Dakota region frequently targeted these Catholic ethnic groups during the roaring twenties.
We today tend to forget the tiered-supremacy system within “white” culture that our grandparents and great-grandparents had grown up under, perhaps because History isn’t as widely taught with enough depth. It still exists. That is why Fish’s defense of using the image is nonsensical, seeing as he knew its history.
At minimum in today’s culture, the toons are problematic. In the hands of a Single Purpose Hate Account like SlimJimWatkins, that often use Chan-culture racist imagery, old-school work is easier to use, and stay hidden while signaling to others what they identify with.
Thanks Peter. I followed your link and discovered that Harry/Octo and his/her pal, K7, were doing a little photoshopping using my Twitter account.
If it wasn't so blatantly stupid I would be angry instead of amused.
