Breaking: Fifth Round Is NOT a Charm for McCarthy
A Series On Misinformation, Disinformation and Subterfuge
In the fourth round, twenty Republicans voted against Kevin McCarthy with one additional vote as present given at the end of the tally. Hakeem Jefferies has had 212, five short of a majority. While it isn’t to likely enough Republicans vote present to grant Speakership to Jefferies (423, with eleven non-votes), I would not be surprised to see more present votes as a threat implying that that could happen.
Here is pseudo-journalist, disinformation mule again missing the clear context of what is going on here.
The point of this obstinance is to keep the House closed and non-functional in order to gain minority control of the funding mechanisms that the House has co-equal responsibility for with the Senate. No House, no new funding for Ukraine nor the Federal government. If the Treason Caucus gets concessions to end omnibus bills along with other things they are requesting, they can gut most of government. If they can’t get what they want, they can simply keep the House shut down and stop funding that way, eventually.
McCarthy will have to deal with the Democrats in order to preserve a working government.
What should the Dems ask for?
I am certain they will ask more than they will actually get, with some gavels, certain Rs excluded from leadership, being the most likely agreement that can be enforced in the short term.
I would also ask to table a number of expected investigations and prioritize ones that are mutually wanted. While it is uncertain when McCarthy reaches across the aisle, it is going to be required if he is to be the next speaker. I also do not believe Scalise would fair any better than McCarthy is given the likely objectives of the treason caucus.
