Breaking: DOJ Announces Case Against Chinese for Obstructing Investigation Over Tech Company
A Series on Misinformation, Disinformation and Subterfuge
This was a welcome announcement, calling out with indictments Chinese officials responsible for interfering in US judicial investigations through threats, intimidation and subterfuge. There were three cases, all tied to the Chinese government. Here are the main issues with the malign foreign influence operations.
Recruitment efforts to join espionage efforts on behalf of the Chinese government (FARA)
Attempted repatriation (kidnapping)
Obstructing official investigations into likely Huawei, which was not named
These are serious charges, just not within the scope of my research which has been focused heavily on American malign influence operations that happen to benefit Russia either directly or indirectly. However, as these all spun out of an initiative under Trump to target Chinese influences (the China Initiative), the indictments were highly likely to be Chinese.
The Chinese are not however, the biggest threat to our democracy. That clearly is still the Russians who provably attacked our elections in 2016, 2018, and likely did so in 2020 and attempting 2022.
The last speaker noted the US Government ended Trump’s limiting China Initiative earlier this after a lengthy review, broadening that to address a range of nation state’s maligned activity.
In layman’s terms, Russia, if you are interfering…
"This was an EGREGIOUS attempt to shield ... from ACCOUNTABILITY and to undermine the INTEGRITY of our JUDICIAL system".
