Breaking: Chris Stewart Resigning (UT-R House)
A Series On Misinformation, Disinformation and Subterfuge
Breaking in the SLC Trib by Bryan Schott, Chris Stewart is resigning as early as tomorrow to spend more time with his ailing spouse. While that part saddens me, hoping that she gets well soon, the political ramifications I find delightful.
While realistically there is little chance of the Democrats picking up the district given his 63%-30% win in 2022, it’s likely the seat stays open until the general election in November. That isn’t to say don’t try despite the retirement Mecca of the state, St. George being in the district.
In order to win, Dems would need to have a significant ground game around UTU and SUU campuses along with WVC and SLC. They would also need to have an outstanding well-known candidate. As it is an off-year where low turnout is a given, anything can happen if they find the right moderate candidate. We’ll see what happens.
The GOP has a current 222-213 advantage, soon narrowed to just 221-213. That means that the margin to pass anything by Republican votes only shrinks more narrowly, as does McCarthy’s fraught Speakership.
It’s also even less likely now McCarthy allows Federally indicted George Santos to be removed.
